In lieu of class this week I'd like you to do the following:
1. Look at these geometric line drawings. Pick one (A or B) and in the comments describe what it is that makes them have UNITY. Remember what you read in the UNITY reading and use the vocabulary of design (elements & principles) in your description.
A.
B.
2. Watch this video on thumbnail sketching.
3. In your sketchbook: Make three 3"x3" thumbnail sketches of different geometric line drawings that each fill the 3x3 frame. The drawings should be abstract (NOT REALISTIC). Just experiment and have fun with line. Do not try to make it look like something.
Here is a great time lapse video of a Sol Lewitt geometric line drawing.
4. In your sketchbook: Make three thumbnail sketches (again 3x3") of organic line drawings in response to your geometric drawings.
****If you don't remember the difference between geometric and organic look at the Line/ Unity POWERPOINT from last week.
A. This drawing contains lines that follow a certain pattern. The waves repeat- each wave filled with distinct sections that repeat in the other waves as well. The white triangles appear in lines. The repetition and rhythm of both of these things help the unity of the drawing as does the monochromatic coloring.
ReplyDeletePicture B. This drawing expresses unity becuase there is a repetition of lines and black and white color. The first factor that gives the drawing unity is the negative space between the lines. The negative space helps the drawing appear to be organized. The proximity of the lines is also a factor. All of the lines are placed closed together as well as having small lines against thick lines, thick lines against thick lines, or the lines standing alone. Continuation gives the lines direction. A lot of the lines are going left to right or up and down. However there are four groups of lines that have a defined direction on an angle. Lastly the colors used in the drawing were a gradation of black and white color. All of these factors give the drawing unity.

ReplyDeleteB. This picture contains a variety of straight lines going in different directions. The lines are of various thickness, and the contrast of the black and white creates negative space. All are straight edge while unifies the whole picture.
A. this picture has unity because even though the 'waves' in the background are busy, they are uniform; they have the same curves and congruent patterns. The triangles have the same angled point to them and are the same empty white color with no outlines. The negative space that makes the triangles creates balance with such a busy design in the waves.
ReplyDeletea) the unity seen in this picture shows lots of different lines the curving inwards and out, but as the definition of unity say, the lines look very harmonious. This picture is very eye catching and the waves and different patterns all balance each other out, and work together to create a sense of unity.
ReplyDeletea) This picture contains a repetition of different patterns and curves. The overall picture is pleasing to eye and it really catches your attention by harmony and the congruency of whats going on in the picture. This picture has unity because of the white triangles and the overall flow of the curved patterns. The triangles, although their sizes are changing, their shape and angles stay the same.
ReplyDeletePicture A) This picture has unity because the way the lines curve and their placement in the composition lead the viewer's eye to move in a certain way. Also the placement of the triangles adds unity to the piece, although they are different shapes and sizes and are placed at various angles, it looks as though the artist did this on purpose. The picture is composed of seemingly random lines and shapes however it is put together with unity. It seems purposeful and almost creates the image of trees growing among hills. It has pattern and definitely seems purposefully created.

A) This drawing contains unity because within each contour line there is repetition. For example, the waves are repeated in each portion of the curved lines. Also, the white trianlges are repeated as they get smaller as they are drawn farther toward the back of the drawing.
ReplyDeleteA) The drawing in figure A represents unity because of the distinct placement of the trangles and the repetition of the lines and patterns. Also , the varying grey and black hues give the piece a sense of unity and balance as opposed to extreme contrasting colors. I think the nuetral tones make the piece cohesive.

ReplyDeleteThis drawing shows unity because there is repetition of the shapes. The designs in the twirls are all similar and go very well together. They are repeated in different hues of the colors and in different sizes. Your eyes are drawn to the triangles because they create negative space and are a good equalizer with the busy background.
Picture A) Figure a shows unity because the way that the background curves and moves makes it look as if the curves are moving towards each other. When you first look at the drawing you look straight to the blank white triangles then makes my eyes move to the curved detailed space behind them and back again which shows unity.

ReplyDeleteThis drawing is brought together by the movement of the background designs. The use of Black and White throughout this picture makes the viewers eyes move back and forth from the triangles to the patterns in the designs behind. It brings the drawing together and unifies it.
Picture B has unity because Unity 'Occurs when an artist creates a design where the elements look as though they belong together, as though some visual connection beyond mere chance has brought them together'. Picture B is a great example of this because of the repitition of lines and colors. The lines and shapes are all geometric and the colors are black and white. These colors show gradation, and the lines show us direction and negative space.
ReplyDeleteA. The drawing showing unity through the wave-like lines that move throughout the picture. The repetition of the lines on the waves help make it flow. The triangle shapes make the viewer look from top to bottom, through the whole drawing. It looks as though it was all brought together by chance.

This image expresses it's unity in many ways. The first can be found in repition; of the patterns inside the rounded lines, of the wave like shapes that all of the smaller lines make, and in the white triangular shapes. The fact that the image is in black, white, and shades of grey only also help to harmonize the diverse shapes and directions. I feel as though the triangles being placed as though they were tucked into the "waves" allows you, like Meghan said, to look at the whole drawing. I also believe this technique emphasizes the sense of layers and depth, which are two ways in which drawings can be made more interesting.
