Figure/Ground Mariah LeBlanc

The artist that created this design calculated his use of positive (black) and negative (white) space. In this design we see a man playing a saxophone, and a woman's face. Personally I would say the focal point is the woman's face because it is her eyes and lips that my eye is instantly drawn to. However the positive space is so defined in this design, some may argue that the man playing the saxophone is the focal point. What I love about this design is the balance between simple and boldness. The positive space is bold due to its contour lines, and it is obvious to the eye that it is a man playing the saxophone. It is because of the contour lines that we are able to see the simplicity of a woman's face. I think this design is an excellent example of figure/ground.
